Keys to Active Living

Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy and living an active lifestyle. People who are active feel better and live longer.   Exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight, delay or prevent diabetes, some cancers and heart problems.  It can also reduce arthritis pain, anxiety and depression.

How much Physical Activity do I need?   Most adults need at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five (5) days per week.   Examples include endurance activities such as walking briskly, swimming for recreation, or riding a bicycle.  Stretching and weight training can also strengthen your body and improve your fitness level.  It is recommended that in addition to endurance or aerobic activities, adults should also engage in activities to strengthen muscles and bones at least two 2 days a week.   Try heavy gardening, lifting weights, or working with resistance bands (long, wide rubber strips that stretch).

The key is to find the right exercise for you.  If it is fun, you are more likely to stay motivated.  If you've been inactive for a while, use a sensible approach and start out slowly.

Tips for staying safe while you are active:
  • If you haven't been active in a while, start slowly and build up.
  • Learn about the types and amounts of activity that are right for you.
  • Choose activities that are appropriate for your fitness level.
  • Build up the time you spend before switching to activities that take more effort.
  • Use the right safety gear and sports equipment.
  • Choose a safe place to do your activity.
Always check with your doctor before beginning any exercise regimen.
