• Your owner’s manual will determine how much of an incline your wheelchair or scooter can go up.
• For a straight incline, measure the distance from the incline origin to the highest point.
• Measure the total vertical climb (straight up and down) that you plan to go up.
• The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) recommends a 1:12 slope, that is 1 foot of ramp for every 1" of rise.  This will work for all manual (self-powered) wheelchairs. 
• A 2:12 slope, or 1 foot of ramp for every 2" rise is recommend for a strong armed manual wheelchair operator, or with an able assistant pushing.  This will also work with powered chairs and scooters.
• A 3:12 slope, or 1 foot of ramp for every 3" rise works for unoccupied power chairs and scooters, however you should check your chair's owners manual for maximum slope guidelines as this slope may cause  problems with high-centering at the top of the ramp for chair/scooters with low clearance.
